Privacy Policy

The Short Version
This site has no backend server and no database. Your location is only ever read when you click “Detect My Location” and approve your browser’s permission prompt. It’s used to render the tool on the page you're viewing, and it's never logged, stored, sold, or associated with an account — because there is no account.
What We Access, and When
We only request your position via the browser's Geolocation API after you click the detect button, and only if you approve the resulting permission prompt. Your browser — not this site — controls that prompt, and you can deny or revoke it at any time in your browser's site settings.
Third Parties Involved in Rendering Your Results
Because this is a static site with no server of its own, requests go out directly from your browser to third-party services when you use the tool. Which ones depends on what you actually do:
- OpenStreetMap tile servers — always, once any location is shown — receive a request for the map imagery around your coordinates so the interactive map can be drawn. This is the same kind of request your browser makes for any image on any website; it includes your coordinates (via the map's viewport) and standard network metadata such as your IP address, which OpenStreetMap's infrastructure controls under its own privacy policy.
- OpenStreetMap's Nominatim API — used two ways: when your device's GPS successfully returns a position, your coordinates are sent to look up a matching address (city, region, country, postal code); if you instead type into the "search for a place instead" field, the text you typed is sent to look up matching coordinates. Either way, no name, email, or other identifying information is sent — only the coordinates or search text and standard network metadata. SeeOpenStreetMap's privacy policy.
- BigDataCloud's reverse-geocoding API — only if OpenStreetMap has no postal code tagged for your exact coordinates — receives your coordinates as a fallback second opinion, purely to try to fill in that one field. SeeBigDataCloud's privacy policy.
This site does not use IP-based location lookups at all — if your device's GPS isn't available, the only fallback is the manual place search above, which you have to type into yourself.
The “Open in Google Maps” and “Open in Apple Maps” buttons only take effect if you click them — they open a new tab or app with your coordinates in the URL; nothing is sent to Google or Apple before that click.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics to understand overall traffic — how many people visit, which pages, roughly which country or region, and what kind of device or browser. Google Analytics sets cookies to do this and, separately from anything this page's location tool does, can derive an approximate IP-based region for you. It iscompletely disconnected from the location tool — it never receives the coordinates, address, or accuracy your browser reports when you click “Detect My Location,” and has no way to link the two. SeeGoogle's Privacy Policyfor what Google itself does with this data, and Google'sAnalytics Opt-out Browser Add-onif you'd like to opt out of it across every site that uses it, not just this one.
What We Store
Nothing location-related. The only things this site writes to your browser are your light/dark theme preference (in local storage — a UI setting, never transmitted anywhere) and Google Analytics' own cookies (covered above). There are no location cookies, no analytics tied to your coordinates, and no server-side logs of your position, because there is no server-side component that sees it.
Your Controls
You can deny the permission prompt, ignore it, or revoke a previously granted permission at any time from your browser's site settings — instructions for common browsers are on ourFAQ page. Clearing your browser's local storage for this site removes the saved theme preference and any Google Analytics cookies it's set for this domain; use Google's opt-out add-on linked above to opt out of Google Analytics across every site, not just this one.
